About us

The work happens whether or not anyone is watching.

Second Shift is an AI integration company. We build the automations and assistants that carry a business through the hours its people are not working, and we operate them afterwards.

Why Second Shift

In a plant that runs around the clock, the second shift is the crew that takes over when the first goes home. The work does not stop, it changes hands.

That is a fair description of what good automation does. It picks up the tasks that do not need a person, so the people you employ spend their attention on the ones that do.

The name is also a reminder of the obligation that comes with it. A shift that takes over is expected to hand back cleanly, with a written record of what happened while everyone else was away. Most automation projects fail on exactly that point rather than on the technology.

We work on the boundary, not the model

The industry sells models. We work on everything around them, because that is where systems actually fail. A model that answers well in a demo is not the hard part. The hard part is what it is connected to, what it may do at three in the morning, and whether anyone can tell afterwards what it did.

Where the engineering goes Unglamorous on purpose
Reach
What a system can see and touch, decided in advance and written down
Memory
What it carries between sessions, and what it is required to forget
Retrieval
Whether an answer can be checked against a source, or only trusted
Cost
What an unattended process may spend before something stops it
Proof
How a change is shown to have helped rather than asserted to have

Those are the problems that decide whether a system is still trusted in month six, which is why they shape how every engagement runs.
