Catching gauges that pass their calibration due date
A micrometer in a drawer at machine four carries a sticker and a line on a spreadsheet, and the two agree until somebody borrows it. Nothing raises an alarm on the day a gauge goes past due. The bill arrives later. When a gauge comes back from the lab out of tolerance, the standard expects you to judge every measurement it took since the last good calibration, which means reaching back through inspection records to find the parts it touched. That reach only works if somebody recorded which gauge measured which job.

When this is the wrong thing to build
Pick something else if you own a dozen hand tools and the whole set goes out to the lab on the same day each year. This matters where gauges are issued to jobs and where an out of tolerance finding means recalling product. Without a record tying a gauge to an inspection, the recall half cannot be built.
