Chasing an account transfer that stopped moving
The transfer initiation form goes to the receiving custodian and then nothing visible happens. Rejects come back through ACATS for a name that does not match the registration, a taxpayer identification number keyed from a stale record, a margin debit nobody knew about, or an account number transposed off a statement. Proprietary funds and some annuities never move at all, so a residual position stays behind and later dividends arrive as residual credits. Status lives on a portal screen at each custodian, which is why nobody looks daily.
The account application comes back not in good order because of a missing initial, and the whole signature cycle runs again.
The custodian holds the assets and is the record. The advisory firm runs a relationship system alongside it, plus a portfolio and reporting system, plus a planning tool, and the same client identity is entered into each because there is no shared key between them.

When this is the wrong thing to build
Pick something else if transfers arrive a handful of times a year, or if one custodian holds everything and the operations person already sees every pending item on a single screen. Watching a queue only pays when accounts land from several firms at once.
The constraint that shapes it
Books and records rules require preservation of communications relating to advice and recommendations, and to the movement of funds, in an accessible place, for a defined period with the earliest portion held locally. More on how this sector works.
