Reading a year of utility bills into a load calculation
A panel upgrade quote turns on whether the existing service can carry the new load, and the existing dwelling method at article 220.87 lets you use the maximum demand recorded over a year instead of a standard calculation. That record sits with the utility, as a billing history export or a Green Button file, and it usually reaches you as a PDF a customer downloaded from a portal. Pulling the peak out of that file is extraction. Whether the reviewer accepts the method is decided locally, by whichever code edition the jurisdiction has adopted.
The technician photographs the nameplate, then types the model and serial from that photo, usually somewhere with bad light and worse signal.
A field services business is judged on the gap between a customer calling and a technician arriving with the right part. Most of the repeated office work exists to close that gap: booking, dispatching, looking up whether a unit is still under warranty, and finding out what the last technician did.

When this is the wrong thing to build
Pick something else if your service work rarely touches the panel, because then the calculation appears a few times a year and reading a bill by hand is faster than any pipeline you could build. This pays where every quote for a heat pump or a charger runs into an old service.
The constraint that shapes it
Licensing is issued by state and often by municipality, per trade, which means not every technician can legally perform every job in every jurisdiction. More on how this sector works.
