Assembling a certificate package at shipment
The shipment is on the dock and the package behind it is a chain of paper: material certificates for every heat that went into the order, the plater certificate, the inspection record. Collecting them from wherever they were filed and checking each heat identifier against what was actually pulled from stock is the work, and that check is the one people skip under shipping pressure, which is how a certificate for a different heat ships with a part whose traceability now stops at receiving. Assembling it per customer requirement before the truck leaves turns a two hour scramble into a queue that empties itself.

A request to quote arrives as an archive of geometry files and drawings, or as a line in a customer portal, or as a scan. An estimator opens each one, decomposes the part into operations mentally, estimates setup and run times, and emails suppliers for material pricing before typing a number into a spreadsheet.
